We depart from your accommodation in Christchurch early at 6am. Stop at Fairlie in the MacKenzie country for a snack at the award-winning bakery.
We have a commentary about the Canterbury Plains and farming, livestock, and the geology of how the Southern Alps and the Canterbury Plains came to be so flat and the Alps suddenly so high.
On the shores of Lake Tekapo, we meet our backcountry guide, Ben. We load into a 4WD and explore this gorgeous remote high country and its landscape. Ben will take us through roaming tussock grasslands with open vistas to the most beautiful views of the MacKenzie high country.
Qualified drivers will take you to experience stunning scenery such as Mt Cook, glaciers, and river crossings. All the while your guide will give you an informative commentary on the geology, ecology, and history that has shaped this unique landscape of Aotearoa New Zealand.
This tour offers you EXCLUSIVE PRIVATE ACCESS to Glenmore Station where you will see Merino sheep, Bighorn rams, Angus cattle, Red deer, and musterers huts. Endangered wading birds may also be viewed.
